Bettas originate from Siam, now known as Thailand. Bettas are a member of a family of fish called Anabantidae, also known as Labyrinths. All fish in this family can survive in water that has a low concentration of disolved oxygen. Of all Labyrinth fishes, bettas are most dependent on oxygen above water. The Labrynth is a small organ located in the top of the head of both male and female Bettas. The air is taken in through the mouth and passed through the labrynth. Bettas are an aggressive fish but thier name is missleading, it is true that males will fight, and sometimes the females are a little nasty, but it is very rare that they will fight to the death, one will give up and swim off and the other will usualy leave him be. Another overlooked aspect of the Siamese Fighting Fish is that the female doesn't take care of the eggs, it is infact the male that does and he will gaurd his offspring fiercely. Bettas like most labyrinth fishes are bubble nest builders.
